Cupcakes, Cupcakes!

I did a post on cupcakes a year and a half ago, it was the new trend to have cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake and cupcakes continue to be a huge hit at weddings and the designs just keep getting more and more creative!

Cute little tuxedo wedding cupcakes.

I absolutely love these black and white cupcakes!
Oooo and these! Oh I can't pick my favourite anymore!
I mentioned them before and here they are again, the benefits of opting for cupcakes instead of a traditional cake. The number one benefit is that they are a lot more affordable than a tiered wedding cake. Other pros are:
- you can bake and decorate your own to add that personal touch
- great for a ladies get-together activity before you hit the aisle
- more environmentally friendly when using a corrugated cardboard cupcake stand instead of wires and tubes for the structure of your tiered cake

Do you still want to keep the traditional and cut the cake? Why not have a cake as the cake topper for your cupcakes??

Happy Cupcakes!

Going Cupcakes!

Cupcakes is the new craze at weddings! They are given as favours at the end of the evening or even in place of the wedding cake. There are a few advantages as you opt for cupcakes for your wedding:

- a lot more affordable than a tiered wedding cake
- you can bake and decorate your own to add that personal touch
- great for a ladies get-together activity before you hit the aisle
- more environmentally friendly when using a corrugated cardboard cupcake stand instead of wires and tubes for the structure of your tiered cake

Cupcakes are also fun to display and decorate!

These cupcake stands are from a company located in Michigan. Cupcaketree is a company that locally manufactures completely recyclable, convenient and affordable cupcake stands – all important eco-friendly features for the green wedding movement. Eventhough these stands are made out of cardboard, you can easily pass them to your friends who are getting married. Cupcaketree suggests to wrap the stand in foil or plastic or use a non-toxic household spray paint or a good quality acrylic paint to moisture-proof and extend the life of the Cupcaketree. The stands are also lightweight so it keeps shipping costs low for budget conscious brides.

Can You Tell?

More and more couples are opting for a fake cake for the sake of pictures instead of going for a real cake that can cost over $1000. Some companies rent out fake cakes which can save you tons and give you more budget for other areas of your wedding.

Cake Rental.com does exactly that! Can you tell if these are real or fake?

If you like the idea of a fake care, but still would like to have a real wedding cake, why not do half-half? Discuss with your baker the possibility of having 1 or 2 layers made out of foam instead of real cake. When you cut your cake, cut from the real tier of course. Your guest will never know the other tiers are fake! When a slice of cake is give to your guests, they will never know that it's not from the same cake you cut from, but a much less expensive sheet cake that was never brought out of the kitchen!

Fresh vs. Sugar

I constantly have brides tell me "I didn't know that wedding cakes are SO expensive!" A wedding cake with 100 servings can start between $800 to $1000! For the brides and grooms who are on a tight budget, does that mean they have to leave out the cake?

The good news is that you don't have to be without a cake and still fit a beautiful cake into your small budget. Instead of sugar flowers, have fresh flowers instead. There are two advantages to this. One is that the fresh flowers is much less expensive than sugar flowers. You can imagine the reason for this, sugar flowers take many hours of work, that is why they are so costly. Fresh flowers can add a beautiful touch to your wedding cake.

Secondly, have your florist provide the fresh flowers for the cake. This way, the flowers on your cake will match your bouquet and your flower centerpieces so there's a nice flow to your floral elements at your wedding.

Think Upside Down!

To make your wedding truly unique, not only do you have to think outside the box, now you've to start thinking UPSIDE DOWN! When I saw these in the Weddingstar magazine a couple of weeks ago, I thought it's a neat and innovative way of using vases for centerpieces. Vases aren't only used for flowers anymore.

Then yesterday, when I was browsing the Wilton website, I found another innovative way of using things upside down!Nowadays, glasses aren't only used for drinking, they are used for cake stands! I love unique ideas like these and I can't wait to use it for a bridal shower or baby shower and WOW my guests with them.

Baking Mode

Lately, I've been in baking mode! Baking is so much fun and satisfying, well... at least when they turn out the way I want them to...

These aren't holiday desserts, but I just had to share!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Green Tea Pound Cake

Green Tea Cheesecake

Chocolate "Soccer Ball" Cake
with Almond Icing (white) and Chocolate Icing (dark)

For a Youth Soccer Event

Durian Cheesecake
I know... not everyone's favourite taste...

Green Tea Yogurt Mousse Chiffon Cake

Oh you must have noticed... I have this thing with green tea flavoured desserts! My fav so far is the Green Tea Yogurt Mousse Chiffon Cake.

Last month, I also took the Wilton Cake Decorating Course 1 at Michaels in Abbotsford, BC. Yes, unfortunately there's no Michaels anywhere close to Montreal.

I must say, I am the worse at the Wilton Rose. We learned to do it over the course of 4 lessons, 1 step every week. Some people in my class got it right away. You've no idea how many roses I tired to make and how much time it took me to finally come up with 4 somewhat decent ones for my cake. I had a lot of fun in the course and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in cake decorating.

I absolutely love all their cakes 'n things from Pink Cake Box! They have hundreds and hundreds of the most amazing and FUN cake designs I've ever seen! Check out their gallery and be inspired! They also have videos with cookie and cupcake decorating instructions and tips as well as their segment on CNN. It's really too bad they're not located in Quebec, I would definitely recommend them to our local brides. New Jersey brides are SO lucky!
